Nu-Rave Genre Fronted by Klaxons

They've been upheld as the founders of a musical style that may not even exist, one that entails dressing in acid colors, carrying glow sticks and screaming about fantastical events and an apocalyptic future.

Members of the London group Klaxons have unknowingly been pushed to the front line of "nu-rave," the disputable musical subculture that involves elements of rave culture, electronica, indie and punk music.

Despite whatever labels the artistic press has tried to impose upon the band, the 4-piece group (Jamie Reynolds on vocals, bass and keyboards; James Righton on vocals, bass and keyboards; Simon Taylor-Davis on guitar and backing vocals; and Steffan Halperin on drums and backing vocals) is not your ordinary British band. After the release of its 1st album, "Myths of the Near Future" (Polydor Records), the band won Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize, awarded in the past to artists like Franz Ferdinand and PJ Harvey.

Klaxons’ music is driven by intense pop synths, swirling, heavy guitar, and frenetic dance-punk beats. Vocalists Reynolds and Righton share both high-pitched shrieks and dizzyingly melodic singing, all the while wailing away on their bass guitars.

Catch Klaxons, along with Mystery Jets, on Sept. thirtieth at Showbox at the Market, 1426 First Ave., Seattle. Doors open at eight pm. Cost is $15 advance or $17 at the door.
